Traditional vs. Smart Vending: Choosing a Setup for Your Building

Compare the shopping flow, product flexibility, site requirements, and service plan before choosing a vending setup.

Updated September 7, 2026.

The right vending setup depends on the people using the building and the work required to keep it stocked. Compare the shopper experience, product needs, equipment requirements, and service plan together.

Traditional vending commonly asks a shopper to select a product before it is dispensed. Smart vending, like the machine in our demo, lets a shopper unlock a door, choose products from the shelves, and close the door to complete the shopping process. Features vary by model, so compare the actual equipment being offered.

Product selection matters. Think about package sizes, refrigeration needs, the audience’s preferences, and suitable non-food essentials. A flexible shelf does not mean every product will fit or can be stored safely in every machine. Confirm the intended assortment with the operator.

Site requirements matter too. Review the machine’s footprint, door clearance, power, connectivity, access rules, and delivery route. Consider where people naturally pass through the building and how the placement will affect circulation.

Then compare service responsibilities. Who stocks products, rotates dated items, cleans the equipment, responds to faults, and helps shoppers with payment questions? Ask how those responsibilities are documented and how the location can contact the operator.

Smart Mart provides managed smart vending in the Portland area and can discuss micro markets for suitable spaces. For qualifying locations, there is no equipment cost to the business. A free assessment lets us confirm the setup and placement details.

Try the interactive machine demo to understand the shopper experience, then visit Services or request a site assessment. Operators researching their own placements can use the location-finding guide on our Smart Mart Apps page.
